About the DKW F102

The DKW F102 was the last model to bear the DKW name and the final mass-produced two-stroke car in West Germany. Introduced in 1963, it featured a modern unibody design that was significantly more advanced than its predecessor, the Auto Union 1000. Despite its contemporary styling, the two-stroke engine was increasingly viewed as obsolete by the mid-1960s, leading to poor sales and the eventual sale of Auto Union to Volkswagen. The F102's body shell was later repurposed for the first post-war Audi, the F103, marking the rebirth of the Audi brand.

DKW F102 fun facts

  • The F102 featured a 'fresh oil system' developed with Bosch that automatically mixed oil and fuel, allowing drivers to fill up with pure petrol.
  • Though it was a two-stroke, the F102 was marketed as having the smoothness of a six-cylinder engine due to its three-cylinder firing order.
  • A rare V6 two-stroke engine was developed for the F102 by combining two 3-cylinder blocks, but only about 13 cars were ever fitted with it.
