About the DKW Schnellaster

The DKW Schnellaster, or 'Rapid Transporter', was the first vehicle produced by the reformed Auto Union in Ingolstadt after World War II. Its revolutionary 'one-box' design featured a transverse engine and front-wheel drive, enabling a completely flat loading floor just 40cm off the ground—a layout that predated the modern minivan by decades. The 0.9-litre three-cylinder two-stroke engine, famously marketed as '3=6' to suggest it had the power strokes of a four-stroke six-cylinder, provided a distinctive soundtrack and surprising utility. While it struggled to compete with the sales volume of the Volkswagen Type 2, its space-efficient engineering remains a landmark in commercial vehicle history.
