About the Daihatsu Domino L55

The L55 was the first-generation Daihatsu Mira, launched in Japan in June 1980 as the Mira Cuore to replace the Max Cuore and exported as the Cuore or, in Britain from 1981, the Domino. The representative UK car is the 547cc three-door hatchback, whose SOHC AB-series two-cylinder engine uses twin balance shafts for four-cylinder-like smoothness and drives the front wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. Data for the equivalent German-market Cuore quote 27 PS, a 565 kg kerb weight and a top speed of 112 km/h. From the second half of 1982 a 617cc AD engine (L60) was added for European export markets, while Japan gained a 41 PS Mira Turbo in October 1983. The L55 was replaced by the three-cylinder L70 generation in 1985.

Daihatsu Domino L55 fun facts

  • Its twin balance shafts gave the little two-cylinder the smoothness of a four, but the engine reportedly cost about as much to build as a conventional four-cylinder.
  • Although the L55 was the first Daihatsu Mira, it is usually counted as the second-generation Cuore, and in Japan it was first marketed as the Mira Cuore until May 1982.
  • The Michelotti PAC (Personal Automotive Commuter) prototype shown at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show was based on this generation of the Cuore.
