About the Suzuki Alto Mk1

The first-generation Suzuki Alto, known internally as the SS40, was designed as a low-cost 'people's car' for the Japanese market and export territories. While the Japanese domestic version used a 539cc two-stroke engine to meet Kei car regulations, export models like this 0.8-litre variant featured the four-stroke F8B engine. It is celebrated for its extreme simplicity, lightweight construction, and exceptional fuel economy. Today, early Altos are increasingly rare survivors, valued by collectors for their utilitarian charm and historical significance in the evolution of the supermini.
