About the Daihatsu Applause

The Daihatsu Applause was a unique C-segment offering that combined the formal silhouette of a three-box notchback sedan with the utility of a full-length tailgate. Engineered entirely by Daihatsu rather than sharing a Toyota platform, it featured the lightweight all-aluminium HD-series engine also found in the Feroza off-roader. Despite its clever packaging and high reliability, its market reputation was initially hampered by a fuel tank venting issue, leading to the 'Theta' rebranding in 1990. Today, it is a rare sight on European roads, celebrated by enthusiasts of 'unexceptional' classics for its quirky engineering and understated Japanese design.

Daihatsu Applause fun facts

  • The Applause is a 'notchback liftback'; the entire rear section, including the window, lifts up despite it looking like a traditional four-door saloon.
  • Early models were briefly renamed 'Applause Theta' after a recall for fuel tank pressure issues to reassure the public that the problem was solved.
  • It is now exceptionally rare in the UK, with fewer than five examples estimated to remain on the road as of the early 2020s.
