About the Fiat 509

Launched in 1925 as a replacement for the 501, the Fiat 509 was a landmark in Italian automotive history, designed to bring motoring to the middle class. It was remarkably advanced for its size, featuring a small-displacement overhead-camshaft engine that allowed it to keep pace with larger vehicles. The 509 is also famous for introducing the SAVA financing scheme, the first of its kind in Italy, which made car ownership attainable through instalments. While not a powerhouse, its lightweight construction and modern controls made it a charming and agile city car for its era.
