About the BMW 700

The BMW 700 was a critical turning point for the company, providing the necessary cash flow to avoid a hostile takeover by Daimler-Benz in 1959. It was BMW's first model to feature a monocoque structure, departing from the traditional separate chassis. Powered by a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-twin engine derived from the R67 motorcycle, it offered surprisingly agile handling for an economy car. Its success paved the way for the 'New Class' sedans that defined the modern BMW brand.
