About the BMW Z3 M Coupe
Developed by a small team of BMW M engineers led by Burkhard Göschel, the Z3 M Coupe was designed to address the lack of torsional rigidity in the Z3 Roadster. Its distinctive shooting brake silhouette earned it the nickname 'clown shoe', but the design resulted in a chassis 2.7 times stiffer than its open-top sibling. European models from 1998 to 2000 utilised the S50B32 engine from the E36 M3, featuring individual throttle bodies and a high-revving character. It remains a cult classic, prized for its short wheelbase, rear-biased handling, and analogue driving experience.

BMW Z3 M Coupe fun facts
- The project was initially developed in secret by engineers because BMW's board was reluctant to approve a car with such unconventional styling.
- The rear track is wider than the standard Z3, necessitated by the use of the E30 M3's semi-trailing arm rear suspension architecture.
- Despite its small size, the hatchback design made it surprisingly practical, offering significantly more luggage space than the Roadster version.
