About the Austin-Healey Sprite Mk II
The Austin-Healey Sprite Mk II marked a significant departure from the whimsical 'Frogeye' styling of its predecessor, adopting a more conventional front end and a squared-off rear. While it lost the iconic bug-eyed headlights, it gained a much-needed external boot lid and a more modern interior, making it a far more practical proposition for daily use. Mechanically, the early Mk II retained the 948cc A-series engine but benefited from larger twin SU carburettors and a close-ratio gearbox. It remains a quintessential entry-level classic, prized for its direct rack-and-pinion steering and the pure, unadulterated feedback of a lightweight British roadster.

Austin-Healey Sprite Mk II fun facts
- The Mk II Sprite was the first to be badge-engineered as the MG Midget, leading enthusiasts to refer to the combined lineage as 'Spridgets'.
- Because the original design lacked an external boot, the Mk II's new rear end was considered a massive luxury by owners who previously had to reach behind the seats to access luggage.
- The restyled front end was actually a cost-saving measure, as the original Frogeye's complex bonnet pressing was expensive to produce.
