About the Audi V8 D1
The Audi V8 (Typ 4C) was the company's first foray into the full-size luxury market, intended to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series. It was the first Audi to combine a V8 engine with the quattro all-wheel-drive system and an automatic transmission. The 3.6-litre engine was essentially two Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V cylinder heads joined on a common crankcase. Despite its understated styling, it proved its engineering mettle by winning back-to-back DTM titles in 1990 and 1991.
