About the Acura MDX YD1
Introduced for the 2001 model year, the Acura MDX (YD1) was a landmark vehicle that helped shift the luxury SUV market away from truck-based frames toward car-like unibody platforms. Sharing its architecture with the Honda Odyssey, it offered a refined ride and standard three-row seating for seven, a first in its class. Its Variable Torque Management (VTM-4) all-wheel-drive system was innovative for the time, providing proactive engagement during acceleration and a manual lock mode for low-speed traction. While early models faced some transmission reliability concerns, the MDX's blend of Honda practicality and premium amenities made it an immediate commercial success and the 2001 North American Truck of the Year.
