About the Volkswagen Derby Mk2
The Mk2 Volkswagen Derby, essentially a notchback version of the Polo, was rebranded as the Polo Classic in many markets, though it retained the Derby name in Germany until 1984. The Formel E (Formula E) variant was a pioneering economy model featuring a high-compression 1.1-litre engine and a '3+E' gearbox with an ultra-long fourth gear for motorway cruising. Most notably, it featured an early stop-start system (SSA) that cut the engine when idling for more than two seconds to save fuel. Despite its diminutive size, the Derby offered a class-leading 515-litre boot, making it a highly practical, if unglamorous, choice for the efficiency-minded driver.

Volkswagen Derby Mk2 fun facts
- The Formel E's stop-start system was so early that it required the driver to manually restart the engine by dipping the clutch or moving the gear lever.
- The '3+E' transmission was designed so that the top gear acted as an overdrive, significantly reducing engine noise and fuel consumption at high speeds.
- While the Derby name was dropped in Europe in 1984, it was later revived by Volkswagen Mexico for rebadged versions of the SEAT Córdoba and Polo Classic.
