About the Volkswagen Beetle A5
The A5-generation Beetle, launched for the 2012 model year, moved away from the 'New Beetle's' bubble-like geometry in favour of a lower, wider stance inspired by the original Type 1. Built on the PQ35 platform shared with the Golf Mk6, it offered a more sophisticated driving experience and a vastly improved interior that ditched the famous flower vase for a classic flat-fronted dashboard. The 1.2 TSI served as the entry-level petrol variant in Europe, providing a balance of efficiency and adequate urban performance through its turbocharged downsizing. While it never reached the sales heights of its predecessors, it remains a stylish, practical alternative to more conventional hatchbacks.

Volkswagen Beetle A5 fun facts
- The A5 Beetle was the first generation to be officially badged as 'Beetle' in many markets; previous versions were technically the 'Type 1' or 'New Beetle'.
- Designers Walter de Silva and Marc Lichte intentionally flattened the roofline to give the car a more aggressive, 'masculine' profile compared to the 1998 model.
- The 1.2 TSI engine was not offered in the United States, where the base model instead featured a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine.
