About the Toyota Sports 800

The Toyota Sports 800, affectionately known as the 'Yota-Hachi', was the brand's first production sports car. Designed by former aircraft engineer Tatsuo Hasegawa, it prioritised aerodynamic efficiency and extreme weight saving, featuring a thin-gauge steel monocoque and aluminium body panels. Its air-cooled 790cc flat-twin engine was derived from the Publica but upgraded with dual carburettors for better performance. It is historically significant for being one of the first production cars to feature a removable targa-style roof panel, predating Porsche's use of the term.
