About the Tatra 600
The Tatra 600, better known as the Tatraplan, was a revolutionary streamlined saloon that continued the aerodynamic legacy of Hans Ledwinka's pre-war designs. Its name celebrated the new Communist planned economy while referencing its aircraft-inspired 'aeroplan' shape, which achieved a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.32. Featuring a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine and a steel monocoque body, it offered sophisticated engineering for its era. Production was controversially moved from Tatra to the Škoda plant in 1951 by government decree, leading to its eventual discontinuation in 1952. Today, it is a highly prized collector car, valued for its unique aesthetics and historical significance as a symbol of Czech engineering resilience.
