About the Toyota Avensis T220
Launched in 1997 to replace the venerable Carina E, the first-generation Toyota Avensis (T220) was designed specifically for the European market and built at Toyota's Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. While it prioritised comfort, refinement, and legendary reliability over driving excitement, it successfully established Toyota as a serious contender in the D-segment. The 1.8-litre engine featured 'lean burn' technology to improve fuel efficiency, a key selling point for fleet buyers and families alike. Though conservative in styling, its exceptional build quality and spacious interior made it a staple of British roads for over a decade.
