About the Suzuki Fronte

Introduced in 1967, the LC10 generation of the Suzuki Fronte marked a radical departure for the brand, switching from front-wheel drive to a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout to compete with the Subaru 360. Its distinctive 'Coke bottle' styling earned it the nickname 'Daruma' in Japan, after the rounded traditional dolls. The car is powered by a unique air-cooled, three-cylinder two-stroke engine equipped with triple Mikuni carburettors, a setup more common on motorcycles of the era. Despite its diminutive size, it offered surprisingly sophisticated independent suspension at all four corners, providing agile handling that made it a favourite among enthusiast drivers in the Kei class.

Suzuki Fronte fun facts

  • In 1968, Stirling Moss and TT racer Mitsuo Itoh drove a Fronte SS from Milan to Naples at an average speed of over 76 mph to prove its high-speed durability.
  • The LC10's triple-carburettor engine was so compact that the spare wheel was stored in the engine compartment, a layout typically seen in French cars like the Citroën DS.
  • The engine was developed alongside Suzuki's B100 motorcycle engine, sharing the same bore and stroke dimensions for production efficiency.
