About the Subaru Brat
The second-generation Subaru BRAT (Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter) is a cult-classic coupé utility based on the Leone station wagon. While US models famously featured rear-facing jump seats to bypass the 25% 'Chicken Tax' on light trucks, international versions like the GL offered a more conventional utility layout with a dual-range four-wheel-drive system. Powered by the EA-81 boxer engine, it is prized by collectors for its mechanical simplicity, rugged off-road capability, and unique 1980s aesthetic. Though production for the US ended in 1987, it remained a staple in markets like the UK and Australia until 1994.

- President Ronald Reagan owned a 1978 Subaru BRAT, which he used for over two decades at his Rancho del Cielo in California.
- The spare tire is uniquely mounted under the bonnet, directly on top of the flat-four engine to save space in the cargo bed.
