About the Rolls-Royce Twenty

Introduced in 1922 to navigate the post-WWI economic slump, the Rolls-Royce Twenty was the marque's first 'small' car and the first designed specifically for owner-drivers rather than chauffeurs. It featured a modern 3.1-litre overhead-valve straight-six engine with a detachable cylinder head, a layout that served as the blueprint for Rolls-Royce powerplants for the next thirty years. While smaller than the Silver Ghost, it maintained the brand's legendary standards of refinement and build quality. Early models are distinguished by their horizontal radiator shutters and three-speed central gear change, offering a more manageable and 'sweet-running' experience for the gentleman driver.

Rolls-Royce Twenty fun facts

  • Early Twenties featured horizontal radiator shutters; these were changed to vertical shutters in 1928 to match the larger Phantom models.
  • Despite being the 'small' Rolls-Royce, many owners still fitted heavy limousine bodies, which significantly hampered the car's 60 mph top speed.
  • The Twenty's engine design was so successful that its basic architecture remained visible in Rolls-Royce six-cylinder engines until the late 1950s.
