About the Renault Espace Mk2
The second-generation Renault Espace, known internally as the J63, matured the pioneering one-box concept with smoother, more aerodynamic styling and a significantly improved interior. Built by Matra using a galvanised steel chassis and glass-fibre reinforced plastic body panels, it remained lighter and more car-like to drive than its American counterparts. The 2.1-litre 'Douvrin' turbodiesel was the workhorse of the range, offering respectable efficiency for a seven-seater, though it lacked the refinement of the flagship V6. Its modular interior, featuring swivelling front seats and removable rear chairs, cemented the Espace as the benchmark for European family transport throughout the 1990s.
