About the Renault Espace Mk1
Launched in 1984, the Renault Espace Mk1 is widely credited as the first European multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). Conceived by Matra and originally rejected by Peugeot, it featured a radical 'one-box' design with a galvanised steel chassis and glass-fibre body panels. The 2.0 TXE trim offered a versatile interior where the front seats could swivel 180 degrees to face the rear, creating a mobile lounge. Its car-like driving dynamics and immense practicality made it a cult classic, though early sales were slow with only nine units sold in the first month.
