About the Reliant Robin
The Reliant Robin is one of Britain's most famous economy cars, designed to be driven on a motorcycle licence due to its three-wheel configuration. The 850 variant, introduced in 1975, featured a larger 848cc all-aluminium engine that provided a modest but necessary power boost over the original 750. Its lightweight glass-fibre bodywork ensured it was resistant to rust, though its handling characteristics required a cautious approach to cornering. Despite being the frequent butt of jokes, it remains a beloved cult classic for its simplicity and unique place in British motoring history.

Reliant Robin fun facts
- Because it had only three wheels and weighed under 450kg, the Robin was officially classified as a motor tricycle, allowing for lower road tax and licensing requirements.
- The Robin's body is made entirely of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) panels fitted to a steel chassis, making it remarkably light and immune to body rot.
- Princess Anne famously owned a Reliant Robin, helping to briefly elevate the car's image beyond its budget-conscious roots.
