About the Reliant Rebel

The Reliant Rebel was the Tamworth-based manufacturer's first serious attempt at a four-wheeled economy car, designed to bridge the gap for three-wheeler owners graduating to a full car licence. Featuring a rust-proof glass-fibre body styled by Ogle Design and a robust steel box-section chassis, it was marketed as a durable alternative to the Austin Mini and Hillman Imp. The 700 variant, introduced in 1967, featured an uprated 701cc all-alloy engine and a redesigned chassis to improve performance and practicality. While it offered exceptional fuel economy and a tight turning circle, its high price and modest performance meant it remained a niche choice compared to its mass-produced rivals.
