About the Porsche 550 Spyder
The Porsche 550 Spyder was the marque's first purpose-built competition car, designed to dominate the 1.5-litre class while challenging much larger rivals. At its heart is the legendary Ernst Fuhrmann-designed 'Carrera' engine, a complex four-cam flat-four that required dozens of man-hours to assemble. Its lightweight aluminium body and mid-engine layout provided exceptional agility, earning it the 'Giant Killer' nickname after victories at the Targa Florio and Carrera Panamericana. Beyond its racing pedigree, the 550 is inextricably linked to pop culture as the car in which James Dean met his end, cementing its status as one of the most valuable and iconic Porsches ever built.
