About the Pontiac Tempest
The second-generation Pontiac Tempest moved to the GM A-body platform, abandoning the experimental rear transaxle of its predecessor for a conventional front-engine layout. While the 326 cubic-inch V8 was the popular choice, the 215 cubic-inch (3.5-litre) Buick-sourced aluminum V8 remained a rare and lightweight alternative for those seeking balanced handling. This generation is most famous for spawning the GTO package, which effectively launched the American muscle car craze. The 1965 model is distinguished by its vertically stacked quad headlights and a revised 'split-grille' design that became a brand hallmark.
