About the Peugeot 405
The Peugeot 405 Mi16 is widely regarded as one of the finest-handling front-wheel-drive saloons of its era, sharing its DNA with the legendary 205 GTI. Its 1.9-litre XU9J4 engine was the first mass-produced French 16-valve unit, delivering a high-revving character that complemented the car's exceptional chassis balance. While the Phase 1 models are prized for their lighter weight and higher power output before catalytic converters were mandated, all Mi16s are celebrated for their communicative steering and 'passive' rear-steer suspension. Despite its critical acclaim and European Car of the Year title, it remains a rare sight today due to low survival rates.
