About the Lotus Elise S1
Launched at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Elise S1 was a revolutionary return to form for Lotus, featuring a world-first epoxy-bonded extruded aluminium chassis. Named after Elisa Artioli, the granddaughter of then-chairman Romano Artioli, it prioritised weight reduction over raw power to achieve supercar-rivalling agility. The mid-mounted Rover K-Series engine provides a flexible power delivery, while the lack of power steering and brake assistance offers an unfiltered connection to the road. Its minimalist cabin and composite bodywork make it one of the purest driving machines of the modern era.

Lotus Elise S1 fun facts
- Early production cars featured innovative Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) brake discs, which were exceptionally light but eventually replaced by cast iron due to high costs.
- The entire bonded aluminium chassis weighs just 68kg, contributing to a total kerb weight that is significantly lower than a contemporary Mazda MX-5.
- The Elise was so successful that Lotus had to increase planned production from 400 units per year to 2,500 to meet global demand.
