About the Peugeot 104
Launched in 1972, the Peugeot 104 was one of the first modern European superminis, featuring a space-efficient transverse engine layout designed by Paolo Martin at Pininfarina. Its all-aluminium 'Douvrin' engine was canted back at 72 degrees to allow the spare wheel to be stored in the engine bay, maximizing cabin and boot space. Originally a saloon, it gained a proper hatchback tailgate in 1976, significantly increasing its popularity. While outshone in sales by the Renault 5, the 104's clever engineering formed the basis for the Citroën Visa and Talbot Samba, and it remained in production for 16 years until the success of the 205.
