About the Oldsmobile 88

The 1949 Oldsmobile 88 is widely regarded as the first true American muscle car, created by pairing the lightweight body of the Oldsmobile 76 with the powerful new overhead-valve 'Rocket' V8. This high-compression engine was a technological marvel for the era, offering significantly more performance than contemporary flathead designs. The 88 dominated NASCAR in its early years, winning 10 out of 19 races in the 1949 season. Its combination of a relatively compact chassis and a potent V8 set the template for performance cars for decades to come.
