About the Oldsmobile 88
The 1959 Oldsmobile 88 marked a radical departure from the 'jukebox' styling of the previous year, introducing the 'Linear Look' with its flat-blade fins and expansive glass. The Super 88 trim featured the new 394 cubic-inch (6.5-litre) Rocket V8, the largest iteration of the original Rocket engine family. Despite its immense size and weight, the Super 88 was surprisingly quick for its era, benefiting from the refined Jetaway Hydra-Matic transmission. Today, it is prized by collectors for its space-age dashboard and iconic split-oval taillights, representing the peak of General Motors' flamboyant late-fifties design.
