About the NSU Spider
Introduced at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the NSU Spider made history as the first series-production vehicle to feature Felix Wankel's rotary engine. Based on the Bertone-styled Sport Prinz, it utilised a rear-mounted, water-cooled single-rotor unit that offered impressive smoothness and a high power-to-weight ratio for its size. Despite its technical innovation and standard front disc brakes, the Spider suffered from early reliability issues, specifically regarding apex seal wear, which limited its commercial success. Today, it is a highly prized collector's item, representing the dawn of rotary power in the automotive industry.

NSU Spider fun facts
- The engine was so compact that NSU was able to fit two luggage compartments: one in the front and a shallow one directly above the rear engine.
- In 1966, Al Auger became the first person to race a Wankel-powered production car in a sanctioned event, campaigning a Spider in the SCCA championship.
- While the official redline was set at 6,000 rpm for longevity, the engine was capable of revving past 8,000 rpm due to its lack of reciprocating parts.
