About the NSU Ro 80

The NSU Ro 80 is one of the most technologically ambitious saloons ever produced, featuring a twin-rotor Wankel engine and a drag coefficient of just 0.35. Designed by Claus Luthe, its wedge-shaped silhouette and large glasshouse set a template for aerodynamic design that Audi would later adopt for the 100 C3. It drives with remarkable smoothness and stability, though early reliability issues with the rotor tip seals famously crippled NSU's finances. Despite these teething troubles, it remains a landmark of industrial design and was rightfully voted European Car of the Year in 1968.

NSU Ro 80 fun facts

  • The transmission has no clutch pedal; instead, a microswitch on the gear lever triggers a vacuum-operated clutch whenever the driver touches the knob.
  • Early owners famously greeted each other by holding up fingers to indicate how many replacement engines their car had already required.
  • The front disc brakes are mounted inboard next to the gearbox to reduce unsprung weight, a feature usually reserved for high-end sports cars.
