About the Morris Cowley

Launched in 1954, the Morris Cowley (Series I) was positioned as a simplified, more affordable version of the Morris Oxford Series II. It utilised the 1200cc B-Series engine, a smaller version of the Oxford's 1.5-litre unit, and lacked some of the Oxford's exterior chrome and interior refinements like a heater or clock as standard. The car featured a monocoque construction and independent front suspension, providing respectable handling for a mid-fifties family saloon. While less common today than the Oxford, it remains a charming example of BMC's post-war austerity engineering.

Morris Cowley fun facts

  • The Cowley name was a revival of the famous 'Bullnose' Cowley moniker from the 1920s, named after the location of the Morris factory.
  • To save costs, the Cowley featured a simplified dashboard with a central speedometer and lacked the chrome side-rubbing strips found on the Oxford.
  • The 1200cc B-Series engine used in the Cowley was also shared with the Austin A40 Cambridge of the same era.
