About the Mercedes-Benz 170 V W136

Introduced at the 1936 Berlin Motor Show, the 170 V (W136) was a pivotal model for Mercedes-Benz, moving the brand toward higher-volume production. The 'V' stood for 'Vorn' (front), distinguishing it from the rear-engined 170 H. It featured an innovative X-shaped oval-tube frame and independent suspension, providing a level of refinement and durability that made it Germany's best-selling car of the late 1930s. Its robust side-valve engine and simple construction were so successful that production was famously restarted in 1946 to help rebuild the company after the war.
