About the Mini John Cooper Works GP R53
The John Cooper Works GP (often called the GP1) was the hardcore swan song for the first-generation R53 Mini. Assembled by Bertone in Italy, it underwent a significant weight-saving programme that included deleting the rear seats, rear wiper, and soundproofing, while adding a distinctive carbon-fibre rear wing and unique 18-inch wheels. The 1.6-litre Tritec engine was tuned with a revised intercooler and high-volume injectors to produce 218 hp, delivered with the characteristic whine of its Eaton supercharger. With a mechanical limited-slip differential and stiffened suspension as standard, it remains one of the most visceral and sought-after modern Minis for collectors.
