About the MG ZT

The MG ZT 260 was a radical engineering project that converted the front-wheel-drive Rover 75 platform to a rear-wheel-drive layout to accommodate a 4.6-litre Ford 'Modular' V8. Developed with assistance from Prodrive, the conversion required a massive new floor pan and a bespoke multi-link rear suspension setup. It offers a unique driving experience, combining a traditional lazy American V8 soundtrack with a surprisingly composed and well-balanced British chassis. Production was cut short by the collapse of the MG Rover Group in 2005, making these rare and highly sought-after modern classics.

MG ZT fun facts

  • To fit the V8, engineers had to rotate the engine 90 degrees and create a completely new transmission tunnel, effectively re-engineering the entire car.
  • The ZT 260 uses the same 4.6-litre 2-valve SOHC V8 engine found in the Ford Mustang GT of the same era.
  • A special 'XPower' version of this engine was used in the MG SV supercar, and a land speed record version of the ZT reached 225 mph at Bonneville.
