About the MG TD

The MG TD Midget was a pivotal evolution of the T-Series, specifically modernised to capture the post-war American market. It replaced the spindly wire wheels of the TC with 15-inch steel discs and introduced independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, significantly improving ride quality and handling. While purists initially decried its 'softer' nature, the TD became the most successful T-Series model, with over 80% of production exported to the United States. It remains a quintessential entry-level classic, offering a raw, wind-in-the-hair experience with robust mechanicals and a vast support network.

MG TD fun facts

  • The TD was the first MG to be offered with factory left-hand drive, a move that helped it sell nearly 24,000 units in the United States alone.
  • Because of post-war fuel rationing in the UK, the higher-compression Mark II competition engine was initially intended only for export markets.
  • The TD's chassis was actually a shortened version of the MG Y-Type saloon, which provided the mounting points for its new independent front suspension.
