About the MG MGF

Launched in 1995, the MGF was the first all-new MG sports car in over 30 years, marking a radical departure from the front-engined MGB with its mid-mounted Rover K-Series engine. The 1.8i VVC trim featured an innovative Variable Valve Control system, allowing the engine to breathe more efficiently at high revs without sacrificing low-end torque. Its most distinctive technical feature is the Hydragas interconnected suspension, which provides a remarkably supple ride for a small sports car. While early models were plagued by head gasket issues, the MGF remains a popular entry-level classic for its balanced handling and quintessentially British character.

MG MGF fun facts

  • The MGF's Hydragas suspension was actually a development of the system used in the humble Rover Metro, adapted for a mid-engined layout.
  • Despite its British heritage, the MGF was never officially sold in the United States because BMW, MG's parent company at the time, did not want it to compete with the Z3.
  • The VVC engine was so advanced for its time that it allowed the MGF to outperform the contemporary Mazda MX-5 in both acceleration and top speed.
