About the Mercedes-Benz SL R107

The R107 generation SL remained in production for 18 years, becoming a symbol of success and durability. The 380 SL variant introduced the all-alloy M116 V8 engine, which offered improved efficiency over the earlier iron-block units. While North American versions were significantly detuned for emissions, European-spec models retained respectable performance. It is highly regarded by collectors for its exceptional build quality and the 'hewn from a solid block' feel of its controls.

Mercedes-Benz SL R107 fun facts

  • Early US-market 380 SLs were notorious for single-row timing chains that could fail; most survivors have been converted to the more robust double-row chain found on European models.
  • The R107 was the first Mercedes-Benz to feature the distinctive 'ridged' rear light lenses, designed to stay clean by disrupting airflow and shedding dirt.
  • Despite being a roadster, the R107 was so structurally sound that it was used as the basis for the SLC coupé, which featured a longer wheelbase.
