About the Mazda MX-5 NB
The second-generation 'NB' MX-5 arrived in 1998, famously replacing the original's pop-up headlights with fixed units to meet safety regulations and improve aerodynamics. While the chassis was largely carried over from the NA, it was significantly stiffened, and the 1.8-litre BP-4W engine received a new cylinder head and a variable intake system (VICS) for improved mid-range response. It remains a benchmark for driver engagement, offering a pure, analog experience with a legendary gear shift and 50:50 weight distribution. As the NA becomes increasingly expensive, the NB is now highly prized by collectors for its improved refinement and daily usability without sacrificing the original's lightweight ethos.
