About the Mazda CX-7

The Mazda CX-7 was a pioneer in the performance crossover segment, sharing its 2.3-litre DISI turbocharged engine with the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6. Designed to look and handle more like a sports car than a traditional SUV, it features a steeply raked 66-degree windscreen and a suspension setup focused on agility. While it offered class-leading driving dynamics for its time, it was often criticised for its high fuel consumption and limited interior space compared to more utilitarian rivals. Today, it is remembered as a bold attempt by Mazda to inject 'Zoom-Zoom' personality into the family SUV market.

Mazda CX-7 fun facts

  • The CX-7's exterior design was heavily influenced by the Mazda RX-8 sports car, particularly in its prominent front wheel arches.
  • Despite its SUV appearance, the CX-7 was not intended for off-roading and featured a front-biased Active Torque Split AWD system.
  • The 2.3-litre engine used a smaller turbocharger than the Mazdaspeed3 to provide better low-end torque suitable for a heavier vehicle.
