About the Lotus Esprit S3
Launched in 1981, the Esprit S3 (Series 3) represented a significant leap in build quality and refinement for Lotus's flagship mid-engined sports car. It adopted the stiffer galvanised backbone chassis and improved suspension geometry from the Essex Turbo Esprit, but retained the naturally aspirated 2.2-litre Type 912 engine. Visually, the S3 is distinguished by its larger bumpers, side air intakes, and a more integrated interior with improved soundproofing. For many collectors, the S3 is the most balanced and usable of the original 'folded paper' Giugiaro-styled Esprits, offering pure handling without the complexity of later turbocharged models.
