About the Renault Sport Spider
Launched in 1996, the Sport Spider was the debut road car from the Renault Sport division, hand-assembled at the Alpine factory in Dieppe. Built around a lightweight aluminium chassis with plastic composite body panels, it prioritised raw driver involvement over all comforts, lacking power steering, ABS, and even a roof. The mid-mounted 2.0-litre F7R engine was shared with the legendary Clio Williams, providing punchy performance in a car weighing less than a tonne. While early 'saute-vent' models featured only a small wind deflector, a full glass windscreen version was introduced in 1997 to broaden its appeal.

Renault Sport Spider fun facts
- The Sport Spider was originally developed as a project to save the Alpine brand, known internally as the A710, before being rebranded as a Renault Sport product.
- UK-market cars were exclusively supplied with the full glass windscreen, whereas the original design required drivers to wear a helmet due to the lack of a screen.
- The car features scissor-opening doors, a design flourish usually reserved for Italian supercars, despite its minimalist and functional interior.
