About the Lotus Esprit S2.2
Launched in 1980 as the Essex Commemorative Edition, the first factory-turbocharged Esprit was a significant leap for Lotus. It featured the Type 910 engine with a dry-sump lubrication system and a Garrett T3 turbocharger, mounted to a new galvanised chassis with revised rear suspension. While the flamboyant Essex livery was initially mandatory, Lotus soon offered the same high-specification mechanicals in more conventional colours. Its combination of Giugiaro's 'folded paper' styling and genuine 150 mph performance cemented its status as a legitimate rival to the Ferrari 308.
