About the Honda Z
Reviving a nameplate from the 1970s, the second-generation Honda Z (PA1) is one of the most mechanically unique Kei cars ever produced. It features an 'Under Midship' (UM-4) layout with the engine mounted vertically beneath the rear seats, resulting in a perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Despite its rugged SUV styling and permanent four-wheel drive, it was designed primarily for urban Japanese environments. Its tall stance and large 15-inch wheels provide excellent visibility and a surprisingly spacious interior for its diminutive footprint.

Honda Z fun facts
- The engine is accessed through a small maintenance hatch located under the rear carpet, making oil checks a unique interior task.
- Because the engine is mid-mounted, the front 'hood' area actually contains the spare tyre and a small storage compartment.
- The Z was manufactured by Yachiyo Industry, a Honda subsidiary that specialised in building light trucks and niche vehicles.
