About the Honda Today
Launched in 1985, the first-generation Honda Today (JW1) signaled Honda's return to the kei car segment after a decade-long absence. Designed with a 'man-maximum, machine-minimum' philosophy, it featured an exceptionally long wheelbase for its class and a low, flat roofline inspired by the Accord AeroDeck. The initial 550 series used a 545cc two-cylinder engine derived from the Acty truck, prioritising urban efficiency and interior packaging over outright performance. Its distinctive round headlights and minimalist interior made it a cult favourite, eventually gaining fame through its appearance in the manga series 'You're Under Arrest'.

Honda Today fun facts
- The Today's wheelbase was actually longer than that of the contemporary Honda CR-X, allowing for a surprisingly spacious cabin despite its tiny exterior dimensions.
- To save space, the transmission was mounted on the same axis as the crankshaft, a layout Honda developed specifically to fit the engine into the Today's short nose.
- The car was originally marketed as a light commercial van to take advantage of Japanese tax breaks, only officially becoming a passenger car in 1988.
