About the Honda Shuttle

The second-generation Honda Shuttle (marketed as the Odyssey in Japan and North America) was a key player in the 1990s MPV boom, prioritising a car-like driving experience over the boxy proportions of its rivals. Built on the Accord platform, it featured double-wishbone suspension at all four corners, providing handling refinement rarely found in the segment. The 2.3i LS trim introduced the F23A7 VTEC engine, offering a smoother power delivery than the earlier 2.2-litre units. Its most celebrated feature was the 'Magic Seat' third row, which folded completely flat into the floor—a design innovation that set the standard for future people carriers.

Honda Shuttle fun facts

  • The Shuttle was one of the first MPVs to feature a third-row seat that could fold flat into a well in the floor, a feature Honda called the 'Hide-away' seat.
  • Despite its size, the Shuttle shared much of its mechanical DNA with the fifth-generation Honda Accord, including its sophisticated suspension geometry.
  • In the UK, the Shuttle was often preferred by those who found the contemporary Volkswagen Sharan and Ford Galaxy too 'van-like' to drive.
