About the Hillman Imp

The Hillman Imp was the Rootes Group's ambitious response to the BMC Mini, featuring a sophisticated all-aluminium overhead-cam engine derived from a Coventry Climax fire-pump unit. The Super trim, introduced in 1965, offered a more luxurious interior with full carpeting, extra sound deadening, and distinctive exterior chrome trim including a dummy front grille. Its rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and fully independent suspension provided handling that many contemporary reviewers found superior to the Mini. Despite its technical brilliance, the Imp's reputation was marred by early reliability issues and industrial unrest at the purpose-built Linwood plant in Scotland.
