About the Hillman Hunter

The Hillman Hunter was the primary variant of the Rootes Group's 'Arrow' project, designed to be a conventional and robust competitor to the Ford Cortina. The GL trim, introduced during the 1970 facelift, sat above the entry-level De Luxe and featured the higher-output 1725cc engine with an alloy cylinder head. Known for its straightforward mechanicals, it utilised MacPherson strut front suspension—a first for Rootes—and a traditional live rear axle. While it lacked the performance of the Holbay-tuned GLS, the GL offered a balanced mix of reliability and modest comfort that made it a staple of British motoring in the 1970s.
