About the GAZ A
The GAZ-A was the Soviet Union's first mass-produced passenger car, built under a technical assistance agreement with the Ford Motor Company. It was a near-exact licensed copy of the 1930 Ford Model A Standard Phaeton, adapted for the harsh conditions of the USSR with reinforced components. While its open phaeton body was ill-suited for Russian winters, it became a vital tool for the Red Army, taxi fleets, and government officials during the first five-year plan. Production took place at the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) until it was replaced by the more modern, closed-body GAZ-M1 in 1936.
